In September 1984 I joined the fire brigade as an operational firefighter working through the ranks and departments to Watch Manager Fire Safety. The operational years gave me unique insight into what really happens in the unfortunate event of a fire and a depth of knowledge and experience of the real risks involved in addition to being NEBOSH H&S and Fire Safety Certified. My final 13 out of 33 years in the fire brigade were spent in the Fire Department auditing businesses just like yours and ensuring they were safe and compliant with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. I advised on building regulations liaising with Local Authority Building Control and Approved Inspectors ensuring both new builds and alterations met with current fire regulations. I sat on both Harrogate and York Safety Advisory Groups (SAG) advising on fire safety issues around event capacities & fire equipment requirements for large indoor and outdoor events in North Yorkshire.
